What the score is made of

Four categories, weighted. Seed oils count three times as much as plastics or ultra-processing, so a poor seed-oil score pulls the overall number down hardest.

  • Seed oil3× weight0
  • Additives2× weight0
  • Plastics0.5× weight
  • NOVA0.5× weight0

Plastics has no ratings yet and count as 0 toward the overall score — an unproven category isn’t a free pass.

What reviewers said

Wendy's discloses ingredients well and its beef patty statement is a single word, but 67 of 102 items contain a seed oil and 82 of 102 contain an additive, because every bun uses soybean or canola oil and the shared fryer runs soybean, canola, cottonseed and hydrogenated soybean oil with dimethylpolysiloxane. Chili, baked potatoes and the Frosty are the only genuinely seed-oil-free food.

Wendy's publishes full ingredient statements through order.wendys.com; 102 items had real data and 67 contain a named seed oil. The shared fryer is brutal: fries are "Cooked In Vegetable Oil (Soybean Oil, Vegetable Oil [May Contain One Or More Of The Following: Canola, Corn, Or Cottonseed], Hydrogenated Soybean Oil, Dimethylpolysiloxane [Anti-Foaming Agent])", and the same fryer covers all nuggets, tenders, seasoned potatoes and every fried chicken sandwich (26 items). The beef is genuinely clean, its statement literally reading "Hamburger Patty.", but every bun carries soybean and/or canola oil so no burger escapes. 82 of 102 items carry an additive: modified starch 52, mono-and-diglycerides 49, maltodextrin 32, HFCS 26, dimethylpolysiloxane 26, DATEM 21, polysorbate 17. Certified dyes appear in only 2 items, both Sparkling Energy drinks. Clean options exist but are marginal: chili, plain and sour-cream baked potatoes, and the Frosty.

Common questions

What is in Wendy's's food?

Tallow reviewers check Wendy's on four things: whether it cooks in seed oils, whether the menu carries artificial additives, whether food touches plastic on the way out, and how much of it arrives premade rather than made in the kitchen. The answers to each are scored below.

Does Wendy's use artificial additives?

Yes. Wendy's scores 0/100 here — reviewers report a lot of artificial additives.

Is Wendy's healthy?

Not really — Wendy's scores 0/100, a poor score. Tallow rates what a kitchen cooks with, not how many calories are on the plate.
