What the score is made of

Four categories, weighted. Seed oils count three times as much as plastics or ultra-processing, so a poor seed-oil score pulls the overall number down hardest.

  • Seed oil3× weight0
  • Additives2× weight0
  • Plastics0.5× weight
  • NOVA0.5× weight0

Plastics has no ratings yet and count as 0 toward the overall score — an unproven category isn’t a free pass.

What reviewers said

Re-scored down from 50 to 0 on 2026-08-06 because the original rating gave Subway credit for clean vegetables and cheese rather than for food you can actually order: every protein is browned or seared in soybean, sunflower or canola oil, the default olive oil blend lists canola first, and every bread except Artisan Italian contains soybean oil. No orderable sandwich is seed-oil-free.

Re-scored 2026-08-06, harsher than the original 50, same source: Subway's own US Product Ingredient Guide, January 2026, 66 item statements. The first pass scored seed oil and additives as "some", but the items earning that credit were vegetables and cheese, not anything you can order as a meal. Every protein is cooked in a seed oil - Oven Roasted turkey "Browned in Soybean Oil and/or Vegetable Oil", Rotisserie-Style Chicken "Seared in Soybean Oil and/or Sunflower Oil", shaved steak soybean oil, veggie patty canola, pastrami canola. The default drizzle, the "Olive Oil Blend", is "Canola oil, extra virgin olive oil" - canola first. Hearty Multigrain and both flatbreads use soybean oil; only Artisan Italian avoids seed oil, and it still carries palm oil and mono-and diglycerides. No orderable sandwich is seed-oil-free. Guide term counts: soybean oil 31, palm 16, canola 8, sunflower 6, natural flavor 62, sodium benzoate 17. Genuinely clean: cut vegetables, avocado, provolone, applesauce.
