What the score is made of

Four categories, weighted. Seed oils count three times as much as plastics or ultra-processing, so a poor seed-oil score pulls the overall number down hardest.

Some dishes use seed oils · Some artificial additives · Food comes premade

Starbucks publishes a full ingredient statement on every product page, so this one was easy to verify. The food case is where the seed oils live: the artisan roll has canola oil, the egg frittata patty soybean oil, the banana walnut and pecan loaf soybean and/or canola oil, and the birthday cake pop soybean plus palm oil. Plain brewed coffee, espresso and tea have none, which is why this is "some" rather than most. Additives split the same way — every food item I read carried emulsifiers, colors or preservatives (mono- and diglycerides, polysorbate 60, sorbitan monostearate, annatto and turmeric color, shellac, and sodium nitrite in the bacon), while a black coffee has nothing in it at all. Worth knowing: most Starbucks stores have high-speed ovens rather than real kitchens, so the food arrives already made and is warmed to order. I did not rate plastic contact.

Common questions

What is in Starbucks's food?

Tallow reviewers check Starbucks on four things: whether it cooks in seed oils, whether the menu carries artificial additives, whether food touches plastic on the way out, and how much of it arrives premade rather than made in the kitchen. The answers to each are scored below.

Yes. Starbucks scores 40/100 here — reviewers report heavy seed oil use.

Does Starbucks use artificial additives?

Yes. Starbucks scores 25/100 here — reviewers report a lot of artificial additives.

Is Starbucks healthy?

Not really — Starbucks scores 28/100, a poor score. Tallow rates what a kitchen cooks with, not how many calories are on the plate.

Yes. Starbucks scores 0/100 here — reviewers report mostly premade or ultra-processed food.
