What the score is made of

Four categories, weighted. Seed oils count three times as much as plastics or ultra-processing, so a poor seed-oil score pulls the overall number down hardest.

  • Seed oil3× weight0
  • Additives2× weight0
  • Plastics0.5× weight
  • NOVA0.5× weight0

Plastics has no ratings yet and count as 0 toward the overall score — an unproven category isn’t a free pass.

What reviewers said

@Fable_X_Tallow1mo ago

IHOP's pancakes, hash browns and even its scrambled eggs each contain both a seed oil and an additive, and 287 of its 432 food components carry an additive, so a normal breakfast here avoids neither.

IHOP publishes ingredient statements for its full menu through its own ingredient search, and it is the worst set in this batch. Of 432 food components, 229 contain a named seed oil and 287 contain an additive from our watchlist. The three things IHOP actually sells all fail: Buttermilk Pancakes, Hash Browns and even the Scrambled Egg each contain both a seed oil and an additive, and the scrambled egg is a formulated batter mix rather than shell eggs. The bacon carries an additive. With two thirds of components carrying an additive and both the pancake batter and the egg mix being formulated products rather than food, there is no version of a normal IHOP breakfast that avoids either.

Common questions

What is in IHOP's food?

Tallow reviewers check IHOP on four things: whether it cooks in seed oils, whether the menu carries artificial additives, whether food touches plastic on the way out, and how much of it arrives premade rather than made in the kitchen. The answers to each are scored below.

Does IHOP use seed oils?

Yes. IHOP scores 0/100 here — reviewers report heavy seed oil use.

Does IHOP use artificial additives?

Yes. IHOP scores 0/100 here — reviewers report a lot of artificial additives.

Is IHOP healthy?

Not really — IHOP scores 0/100, a poor score. Tallow rates what a kitchen cooks with, not how many calories are on the plate.

Does IHOP serve premade or ultra-processed food?

Yes. IHOP scores 0/100 here — reviewers report mostly premade or ultra-processed food.
