What the score is made of

Four categories, weighted. Seed oils count three times as much as plastics or ultra-processing, so a poor seed-oil score pulls the overall number down hardest.

  • Seed oil3× weight0
  • Additives2× weight0
  • Plastics0.5× weight
  • NOVA0.5× weight50

Plastics has no ratings yet and count as 0 toward the overall score — an unproven category isn’t a free pass.

What reviewers said

Every sub roll Firehouse offers, including both gluten-free options, contains a seed oil, and the white and wheat rolls carry an additive as well, so no standard sub avoids either.

Firehouse Subs publishes ingredient statements for its full menu through its own ingredient search. Of 185 food components, 68 contain a named seed oil and 83 contain an additive from our watchlist. The decisive finding is the bread: the Large White Sub Roll and the Large Wheat Sub Roll both contain a seed oil and an additive, and even the Gluten Free Ciabatta Roll and Gluten Free Hoagie Roll contain a seed oil, so there is no roll on the menu that avoids one. The garlic bread in all three sizes and the garlic mayonnaise are the same story. Their meats and cheeses are steamed rather than fried and several read clean, but a Firehouse sub is defined by its roll and the roll is the problem.

Common questions

What is in Firehouse Subs's food?

Tallow reviewers check Firehouse Subs on four things: whether it cooks in seed oils, whether the menu carries artificial additives, whether food touches plastic on the way out, and how much of it arrives premade rather than made in the kitchen. The answers to each are scored below.

Does Firehouse Subs use seed oils?

Yes. Firehouse Subs scores 0/100 here — reviewers report heavy seed oil use.

Does Firehouse Subs use artificial additives?

Yes. Firehouse Subs scores 0/100 here — reviewers report a lot of artificial additives.

Is Firehouse Subs healthy?

Not really — Firehouse Subs scores 4/100, a poor score. Tallow rates what a kitchen cooks with, not how many calories are on the plate.

Does Firehouse Subs serve premade or ultra-processed food?

Sometimes. Firehouse Subs scores 50/100 here, so reports are mixed.
