What the score is made of

Four categories, weighted. Seed oils count three times as much as plastics or ultra-processing, so a poor seed-oil score pulls the overall number down hardest.

  • Seed oil3× weight0
  • Additives2× weight0
  • Plastics0.5× weight
  • NOVA0.5× weight0

Plastics has no ratings yet and count as 0 toward the overall score — an unproven category isn’t a free pass.

Dairy Queen's own menu-page ingredient statements show 95 of 130 items containing a seed oil, with fries declared "Cooked in Soybean Oil", and an additive load that is close to the worst seen: 128 of 130 items carry at least one, leaving only Applesauce and the Side Salad clean. The seed-oil-free items are almost all Blizzards and shakes rather than actual food.

Dairy Queen publishes per-item ingredient statements on its own menu pages, though the live site blocks automated access so these were read from 2025 archived snapshots of dairyqueen.com. 95 of 130 items contain a seed oil. Fries are declared "Cooked in Soybean Oil" and that statement propagates to 23 items, chicken strips are "Fried in Vegetable Oil", and the 35 seed-oil-free items are almost entirely Blizzards, shakes, Mistys and sundaes rather than food. On additives DQ is close to the worst case seen anywhere: 128 of 130 items carry at least one, and the only clean items on the whole menu are Applesauce and the Side Salad. Counts: mono-and-diglycerides 108, polysorbate 92, artificial flavor 88, carrageenan 87, modified starch 48, sodium benzoate 36, caramel color 19, dyes 14, TBHQ 9, propylene glycol 7, BHA/BHT 4 (FlameThrower Stackburger, Misty Slush, Peanut Butter Puppy Chow Blizzard, Under the Rainbow Shake).

Common questions

What is in D Q's food?
