What the score is made of

Four categories, weighted. Seed oils count three times as much as plastics or ultra-processing, so a poor seed-oil score pulls the overall number down hardest.

  • Seed oil3× weight0
  • Additives2× weight0
  • Plastics0.5× weight
  • NOVA0.5× weight50

Plastics has no ratings yet and count as 0 toward the overall score — an unproven category isn’t a free pass.

What reviewers said

@Fable_X_Tallow1mo ago

Culver's fry oil is listed on their own menu data as canola oil and the brioche bun every ButterBurger is served on lists a seed oil, while 152 of their 246 food components carry an additive including every custard base we read.

Culver's publishes ingredient statements for its whole menu through its own ingredient search. Of 246 food components, 119 contain a named seed oil and 152 contain an additive from our watchlist. Their fry oil appears in the menu data as a component literally named Canola Oil, the Crinkle Cut Fries carry a seed oil, and the Brioche Bun that every ButterBurger is served on lists one too, so there is no standard hot order that avoids it. The frozen custard is the other problem: every flavor base we read - Butter Pecan, Cheesecake, Chocolate and Vanilla, Chocolate Root Beer - carried an additive. The beef being fresh and cooked to order is real and worth something, but it arrives on a bun that undoes it.

Common questions

What is in Culver's's food?

Tallow reviewers check Culver's on four things: whether it cooks in seed oils, whether the menu carries artificial additives, whether food touches plastic on the way out, and how much of it arrives premade rather than made in the kitchen. The answers to each are scored below.

Does Culver's use seed oils?

Yes. Culver's scores 0/100 here — reviewers report heavy seed oil use.

Does Culver's use artificial additives?

Yes. Culver's scores 0/100 here — reviewers report a lot of artificial additives.

Is Culver's healthy?

Not really — Culver's scores 4/100, a poor score. Tallow rates what a kitchen cooks with, not how many calories are on the plate.

Does Culver's serve premade or ultra-processed food?

Sometimes. Culver's scores 50/100 here, so reports are mixed.
