What the score is made of

Four categories, weighted. Seed oils count three times as much as plastics or ultra-processing, so a poor seed-oil score pulls the overall number down hardest.

  • Seed oil3× weight50
  • Additives2× weight
  • Plastics0.5× weight
  • NOVA0.5× weight

Additives and Plastics and NOVA have no ratings yet and count as 0 toward the overall score — an unproven category isn’t a free pass.

Cousins Subs publishes almost nothing usable - seven mentions of ingredients, all boilerplate, and no oil words. Soybean oil is named on three items and the fryer runs Wesson shortening on five, with the fat undisclosed. Their own PDF hints oil is a standard build portion, which is unreconciled.

Cousins Subs is the least transparent of the sandwich chains I looked at. Their single nutrition PDF mentions ingredients seven times and every one is boilerplate, and there are no oil words in it at all. What I could pin down: soybean oil is named on exactly three items, and the fryer runs Wesson shortening across five items, though the shortening's actual fat is never disclosed. Kraft mayo appears on 17 items but I could not find a published statement for it, so I am not going to say what is in it. That is genuinely where the evidence stops - I found nothing I could fairly attribute to them on additives. One loose end worth knowing: their own PDF treats a half ounce of oil as a standard build portion while their menu feed only attributes oil to three dishes, and I could not reconcile those two, so the real seed oil exposure may be considerably higher than three items.

Common questions

What is in Cousin's Subs's food?

Tallow reviewers check Cousin's Subs on four things: whether it cooks in seed oils, whether the menu carries artificial additives, whether food touches plastic on the way out, and how much of it arrives premade rather than made in the kitchen. The answers to each are scored below.

Does Cousin's Subs use seed oils?

Sometimes. Cousin's Subs scores 50/100 here, so reports are mixed.

Does Cousin's Subs use artificial additives?

There aren't enough community ratings yet to answer that for Cousin's Subs. If you've eaten there, rating it in the Tallow app is what fills this in.

Is Cousin's Subs healthy?

Not really — Cousin's Subs scores 25/100, a poor score. Tallow rates what a kitchen cooks with, not how many calories are on the plate.

Does Cousin's Subs serve premade or ultra-processed food?

There aren't enough community ratings yet to answer that for Cousin's Subs. If you've eaten there, rating it in the Tallow app is what fills this in.
