What the score is made of

Four categories, weighted. Seed oils count three times as much as plastics or ultra-processing, so a poor seed-oil score pulls the overall number down hardest.

  • Seed oil3× weight50
  • Additives2× weight0
  • Plastics0.5× weight
  • NOVA0.5× weight50

Plastics has no ratings yet and count as 0 toward the overall score — an unproven category isn’t a free pass.

What reviewers said

Buffalo Wild Wings really does fry in beef tallow, and its traditional bone-in wings are nothing but chicken, which makes them a genuinely clean main. But 50 of 96 published components still contain a seed oil and 77 contain an artificial additive, including the bun, the boneless wings, the supplier-par-fried fries and every dressing.

Buffalo Wild Wings fries in beef tallow, not seed oil, and its bone-in wing statement is one line: "JUMBO CHICKEN WINGS 1ST & 2ND WING SECTIONS." Traditional wings with a dry rub are one of the cleanest fast-casual mains anywhere. Everything else undoes it. Of 96 published components, 50 contain a seed oil and 77 contain an artificial additive, leaving 17 free of both. The Challah Bun under every burger and sandwich has soybean and hydrogenated soybean oil. Boneless wings carry soybean oil in the marinade, the breading and the batter. The fries are par-fried by the supplier in canola, soybean or palm oil before they ever meet the tallow. Every dressing lists soybean oil first. Only four sauces avoid seed oil: Asian Zing, Honey BBQ, Sweet BBQ and Teriyaki. Even the tallow is dosed with BHT and dimethylpolysiloxane.
